TIMELINES

Monday 11th - Friday 15th August 2008

We are going to look at melody within harmony and rhythm within melody.

• How do we create melody from the harmony...? (Lines)
• How do we make that melody sound jazzy...? (Time)
• As a rhythm section how do we support and interact with those melodies & ideas...? (Timelines).

This year we will be focusing on negotiating the changes using scale connections and weaving through the harmony using melodic invention, improvisation, melodic & phrasal connections to develop a narrative..

The course will be taking place at The Cinnamon Club, The Firs, Bowdon (let us know if you need directions).

TIMETABLE

10.00 - 1.00: morning workshops (with break)
1.00 - 2.00: lunch
2.00 - 5.00: ensembles (with break)
*7.30 onwards (Mon - Thurs): jam sessions
7.30 onwards (Fri): Final performance (including staff performance)

Instruments will not be provided. Pianists should bring a keyboard and stand, guitarists/bassists etc should also bring amps and cables. All students should bring a music stand. If anyone needs to borrow any equipment, please call to arrange in advance – we will help where we can.

*Attendance of the evening jam session is not compulsory.

Iain Dixon – saxophone Consultant to ABRSM jazz syllabus for saxophone and clarinet. Member of BBC Big Band for 8 years. Played and recorded with Michael Brecker Quindectet (‘Wide Angles’ album). Alec Dankworth - bass Studied at Berklee College, Boston. British Jazz Awards winner. Worked with Stephanie Grappelli, Abdullah Ibrihim, Van Morrison, The Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Alec Dankworth Trio is his current group. http://www.alecdankworth.com/

Fees for the course are £290 (incl. vat) which is due in full by the end of June 2008. Please download and return the booking form with a £50 deposit to secure your place. We are very proud to announce that guitarist Mike Walker is also now teaching on a regular basis here at The Music Place.

Mike is a Salford born guitar player who has played and recorded with the legendary George Russell, peter Erskine, Steve Swallow, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and performed with Dave Holland, Tal Farlow, Vince Mendoza, Anthony Braxton, Bill frisell and many others. Mike plays regularly in the UK, Europe and around the world as well as teaching at the Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts and is a co-director of our many jazz workshops.

Lessons with Mike cost £40 per hour (£20 per half hour) and take place on a Monday evening. Please contact the school for availability.
