JAZZ SUMMER SCHOOL 2007

To Read or not to Read?
That is the Question

Monday 13th - Friday 17th August 2007

Jazz Summer School Students rehearsing, 2005On this year's Summer School we will once again be focusing on improvising with an understanding of basic principles. But unlike other years, we are going to explore pure sound worlds. We will do this by using sheet music to play some pieces but other pieces will be learned entirely by ear (i.e. NO SHEET MUSIC AT ALL!). But don't panic because the basic principles will still apply.

In this way we will experience improvising WITH and WITHOUT sheet music. By doing this we hope to get more in touch with WHAT YOU HEAR.

In addition, after the overwhelming success of the 'Jazz Boot camp', we are considering ways to incorporate an element of this in the week. 'Doc Walker' will once again be in attendance.

We are anticipating that the pieces played purely by ear will be relatively easy in construction but are thinking of adding an element of complexity to the pieces played with sheet music. In doing so, we will be looking at techniques of ensemble playing, dealing with issues such as balance, tuning and how to listen in an ensemble.

The course will be taking place at The Cinnamon Club, The Firs, Bowdon (let us know if you need directions).
