JAZZ SUMMER SCHOOL 2010

GROOVE TIME

gui

Monday 9th - Friday 13th August 2010

GROOVE TIME

In this year's summer school we are going to explore the combination of skills necessary to improve our awareness of TIME in order that our playing has the GROOVE in-built.

How is it that Oscar Peterson can swing all on his own and Eddie Harris can be funky without a drummer?

How can we get in touch with our own sense of rhythm and play with a better feel?

We are going to explore the combination of skills necessary to improve our ability to play the phrases that we hear within the rhythmic context of a groove.

Drummers will explore the idea of melody within TIME & GROOVE. Melody players will explore the idea of rhythm within melody.

We will explore ways to unify and implement our harmonic knowledge within a deeper understanding of TIME & feel to both create and interact with the GROOVE.

It's not only the drummer's or the rhythm section's job to create the GROOVE..., we all have to feel the GROOVE and the TIME together for the music to swing.Jazz Summer School Students rehearsing, 2005
